Sporting Kansas City

In the summer of 2011 I had the chance to work for Kansas City’s recently rebranded Major League Soccer team, Sporting Kansas City. I spent nearly all summer at the team’s brand new, state-of-the-art (and soccer specific!) stadium LIVESTRONG Sporting Park.

Technically I interned with Sporting’s Executive Vice President Chris Wyche in the broadcast side of things, but for the most part I worked with Video Operations Director Brad Mertel.

From the video operations control room at LSP, myself and just a handful of other interns produced nearly everything — other than the soccer itself — shown on the stadium’s array of television and LED screens.

From a journalism standpoint, I didn’t do any reporting. But that was exactly the point. Creating graphics, video and live broadcast production were miles out of my comfort zone at the beginning of the summer. But the behind-the-scenes experience I now have in live broadcast and multimedia production is now an extraordinary supplement to the writing, reporting and editing skills I’m learning at the Missouri School of Journalism.
